What is BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a combat sport that focusses on ground fighting. The sequence of attack usually consists of taking an opponent to the ground and then using specific positions to gain an advantageous position over them. Basic BJJ techniques we teach in classes include:
- Shrimping and Bridging
- Gripping (to keep opponent in place)
- Passing the guard
BJJ is specifically fascinating as it has an open weight category, this means that opponents of any size can take part and a smaller person can (and often does) submit the larger one.
The sport is perfect for women or children that want to learn self defense. As your technique improves you will notice how much stronger, tougher and more confident you feel.
Ground fighting also a crucial part of MMA with a large range of techniques that force an opponent to tap out so this is a great suplementary class to take if wanting to learn MMA.

Our GBTT Instructors are vastly experienced in BJJ, competing competitively in MMA tournaments which largely incorporate BJJ techniques. We know the ins and outs of this ground fighting combat sport.
